TMJ Disorder Treatment in Nashville, TN

If you are experiencing an aching jaw, pain or tenderness in the jaw joints, or pain during chewing, you may have Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ). The temporomandibular joint, which connects your jaw to your skull, is located just beneath the ears on both sides of the face.

Identifying the exact cause of TMJ can be challenging. However, there are several factors we can consider. Common causes of TMJ may include the erosion or displacement of the disk between the jaw bones. Arthritis in the jaw joint can also lead to pain. Trauma, like an injury, can cause chronic pain in the jaw. Additionally, individuals who grind their teeth while sleeping or experience high levels of stress are more prone to TMJ. There may also be a genetic component associated with TMJ.

  • How do I know if I have TMJ?

You cannot diagnose yourself, but there are common symptoms to look for. If you experience any of these symptoms and they do not improve independently, it is important to seek a dentist for an official diagnosis and treatment plan.

    Common signs and symptoms include:

    • Pain in your jaw
    • Tenderness in the jaw
    • Ear pain
    • Pain while chewing
    • Facial pain described as “achy”
    • Locking of the jaw joint – getting stuck in an open or closed position
    • Headaches
  • How do you diagnose TMJ Disorder?

First, we will explore any potential risk factors causing your pain. Then, we will conduct an examination that involves listening to your jaw, observing its movement, and applying pressure to identify the source of the pain. X-rays or 3D images may also be taken. In some cases, an MRI may be necessary to assess any damage to the disk or soft tissues.

  • How do you treat TMJ?

We recommend starting with over-the-counter pain relievers. Tylenol or ibuprofen can be effective in treating minor pain and inflammation.

At Vitality Dental, we treat TMJ with an oral appliance called an Urbanek splint. This device reduces pressure on the TMJ joint, reducing inflammation and pain. We can discuss options with you at your appointment.

In addition to medication and oral appliances, other alternative options may help relieve pain or stress, including:

    • Avoiding foods that overwork the jaw muscles
    • Applying heat and cold to the area
    • Acupuncture
    • Meditation or other relaxation strategies
    • Massage
    • Physical therapy
