Our Tooth Extraction Process in Nashville, TN
At Vitality Dental, we strive to help you preserve all of your teeth. However, there are occasions when a tooth extraction is necessary for the long-term health of your mouth. Tooth extractions at Vitality Dental are usually quick, and the most important aspect is recovery.
To promote proper healing, controlling the bleeding immediately after the tooth extraction is essential. After the extraction, you must bite down on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes to allow a blood clot to form. It’s important not to disturb the blood clot for the next 24 hours, which means avoiding using straws to prevent the development of a dry socket. For swelling, we suggest applying an ice pack to the outer cheek. Once the swelling goes down, a warm compress can be used in the same area for comfort. You can also gently rinse your mouth with salt water to clean the extraction area.

How do I prevent dry socket after tooth extraction?
When a tooth is extracted, a blood clot forms shortly after the surgery, marking the beginning of the healing process. If this blood clot becomes dislodged before your mouth fully recovers, it can cause a painful condition known as a dry socket.
To prevent dry sockets, consider the following tips:
- Avoid using straws or anything that creates suction or a significant air movement.
- Refrain from smoking, as rapid inhalation can dislodge the blood clot, and the chemicals may hinder healing or cause an infection.
- For the first one or two days, stick to soft foods such as applesauce, yogurt, and mashed potatoes.
- Check with your healthcare provider to ensure your medications do not interfere with healing.
- Maintain proper oral hygiene to keep your mouth clean, and consider using an antibacterial mouthwash.
- Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding oral care to facilitate recovery.
